Álvaro Manso Burgos is a researcher at the Institute of Energy Engineering (IIE) at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), specialising in energy communities and urban energy transition. His work focuses on developing mathematical models and optimisation tools to assess how distributed renewable generation and flexibility resources can accelerate the decarbonisation of neighbourhoods and cities.
His research addresses both the technological and regulatory aspects of energy communities, analysing the impact of energy-sharing mechanisms, national regulatory frameworks, participation in balancing markets, and the design of models to ensure a fair distribution of benefits among their members. He has also worked on applying these solutions to tackle energy poverty and on developing energy planning strategies for Mediterranean cities. In addition to his research work, he is the manager of the Urban Energy Transition Chair at the UPV and a lecturer on the Master’s Degree in Renewable Energy at the International University of Valencia (VIU).
