Specialization in Shallow Geothermal Energy: Skills Development and Training Across the EU
Duration
6 weeks
About this course
Specialization in Shallow Geothermal Energy: Skills Development and Training Across the EU is a European Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) developed within the GEOBOOST project to provide standardized and high-quality education in Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) technologies. This training supports widespread adoption of sustainable geothermal energy by delivering up-to-date, technically sound knowledge tailored to the needs of a broad audience across the EU.
Targeted at drillers, planners, decision-makers, policy-makers, installers, designers, and energy consultants, the course offers foundational and applied training in shallow geothermal systems. Learners will follow a step-by-step, chronological sequence of content, including videos, readings, and interactive exercises, with the goal of building capacity, fostering qualification alignment, and strengthening the geothermal market throughout Europe.
What I will learn
By completing this course, participants will:
- Understand the fundamentals of geothermal energy and the role of heat pumps.
- Identify and evaluate different types of Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) systems including Borehole, Groundwater, and Horizontal solutions.
- Integrate GHP systems into energy-efficient buildings and broader energy systems.
- Apply knowledge of site selection, geological conditions, and drilling methods.
- Understand environmental considerations, legal frameworks, and permitting requirements.
- Learn maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting techniques.
- Recognize best practices for reducing thermal interference and ensuring system longevity.
- Explore EU regulatory and technical guidelines, contributing to harmonized qualification pathways.
Requirements
- No prior experience with geothermal technologies is required.
- Recommended for professionals, students, policymakers, or anyone with an interest in renewable energy and sustainable heating/cooling solutions.
- Content is structured to support entry-level and technically inclined participants alike, forming a base for later certification training.
